Rand holds near 16.62 to the dollar as ArcelorMittal SA posts R1.49bn interim loss

The rand traded around 16.62 to the US dollar on 30 July amid a marginally weaker greenback, while ArcelorMittal South Africa reported a R1.49 billion interim loss and insisted that profitability remains within reach. AMSA's position is the sharpest available illustration of South Africa's industrial dilemma: the country holds world-leading iron ore and chrome endowments yet cannot sustain competitive primary steel production against imported product, principally because of electricity cost and reliability alongside rail and port constraints. The company has repeatedly signalled the potential closure of its longs business, an outcome that would remove domestic capacity in structural steel products and increase import dependence. For the beneficiation agenda being advanced at SADC Industrialisation Week this same week, AMSA is the cautionary case: downstream processing mandates cannot succeed where the underlying energy and logistics cost base is uncompetitive.
