APRM confirms Africa Credit Rating Agency will launch 6 October in Port Louis
The African Peer Review Mechanism confirmed that the Africa Credit Rating Agency will launch on 6 October 2026 in Port Louis, Mauritius, establishing the continent's first indigenous sovereign and corporate rating institution. AfCRA responds to a long-standing African policy position that the methodologies of the three dominant global agencies systematically overstate African sovereign risk, inflating borrowing costs relative to observed default experience — a contention the agencies themselves formally reject. The launch date places AfCRA's arrival immediately before the African Mining Week and African Energy Week convenings, and within the window in which the G7 financial architecture reform agenda championed at Évian is expected to produce concrete proposals. For fixed-income investors, the operative question is not whether AfCRA's ratings differ from the incumbents but whether they achieve the regulatory recognition required for institutional mandates to act on them.
