SADC Industrialisation Week panels press circular economy and regional value chain integration
Panellists at SADC Industrialisation Week in Durban addressed progress and constraints in South Africa's transition to a circular economy on 30 July, within a programme centred on regional value chain development in agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, and critical minerals beneficiation. The circular economy strand connects directly to the region's minerals agenda through tailings reprocessing, industrial waste valorisation, and the recovery of critical minerals from legacy mining residues — the model underpinning the Phalaborwa rare earths project in Limpopo. Regional value chain integration is the strategically harder objective: SADC states have overlapping rather than complementary resource endowments, which limits the natural basis for intra-regional specialisation. The practical test of the week's output will be whether it produces binding commitments on standards harmonisation and corridor infrastructure, or restates ambitions that have been articulated at successive summits since the 2015 strategy was adopted.
