Week in review: Ghana's mining terms, Namibia's approval, and the beneficiation stress test
Three developments defined the week's commercial agenda. Ghana moved simultaneously on both ends of its resource nationalism programme — publishing the GoldBod MOU on 29 July while receiving Gold Fields' Tarkwa renewal proposal on 27 July — making Accra the clearest test case on the continent for whether assertive state terms can be imposed without deterring the capital that sustains production. Namibia's approval of the TotalEnergies–Galp transaction consolidated operatorship of both major Orange Basin discoveries and removed the principal obstacle to a Venus final investment decision. And SADC Industrialisation Week convened on critical minerals beneficiation in the same week that ArcelorMittal South Africa posted a R1.49 billion interim loss — an uncomfortable juxtaposition of the beneficiation ambition against the energy and logistics cost base that has made downstream processing uneconomic in the region's most industrialised economy.
