Gold Fields files Tarkwa lease-renewal proposal as traditional authorities push for Ghanaian ownership

Gold Fields confirmed on 27 July that it has submitted a formal lease-renewal proposal to the Government of Ghana for its Tarkwa gold mine, following an initial application lodged in November 2025, with the current lease expiring in 2027. Tarkwa is a cornerstone asset that produced approximately 427,000 ounces in 2025, and the proposal commits to increased local participation, expanded procurement for Ghanaian businesses, and strengthened community benefits. The submission comes days after the Apinto Divisional Council publicly urged the government to award the concession to a wholly Ghanaian-owned company — a call with clear precedent, since Gold Fields lost control of its smaller Damang mine in April when Accra declined renewal and awarded the asset to local contractor Engineers & Planners. The Tarkwa outcome is now the single most consequential test of Ghana's resource nationalism trajectory, and its resolution will set the operating expectation for every foreign mining operator holding a Ghanaian lease approaching expiry.
